Despite being hit by a series of calamities every year, Ormoc City is not backing down. JICA has already cited the city as a model for disaster resiliency in the Philippines. And that is not the only thing the city is doing in order to prepare for its future. Today, it is lowering energy consumption by upgrading over 1,641 road lights with energy-efficient Philips LEDs.

With the city’s ongoing LED lighting retrofit, Ormoc can expect over 70% energy savings (about P4M per year) coming from the its previous sodium street lighting fixtures.

Philips Lighting (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, together with Ormoc City, conducted the official lighting ceremony of the local government’s city-wide LED street lighting upgrade last 13 February 2018. The project, a significant milestone in Ormoc’s complete transformation as a sustainable agro-commercial and industrial hub in Eastern Visayas.

“Peace and order has been my number one focus for the city of Ormoc, the city lighting upgrade translates my mission for the city. Investing in Philips Lighting’s new LED systems is one of the great steps we took in better equipping Ormocanons in undertaking productive pursuits. Aside from the operational and energy savings of our new LED road lights, the upgrade evidently transforms the visual appearance of Ormoc as an urban area – making our community more accessible, usable and safer especially at night,” says Mayor Richard Gomez.

“The City of Ormoc, through the leadership and vision of Mayor Richard Gomez, is one of the pioneering cities who saw how switching to LED lighting can affect not only the city’s energy consumption, but also the way of life of Ormocanons in general – and Philips Lighting is proud to be the chosen partner of Ormoc in making this initiative happen,” Jagan Srinivasan, Philips Lighting country manager said.
