The latest UNIQLO Eames collab won’t make you sit down
3 Oct 2017 – UNIQLO celebrates the groundbreaking contributions of American designer couple Charles and Ray Eames to modern design, art, and culture in the 20th century. Signature Eames chairs and patterns emblazon multi-colored t-shirts, stoles, and slippers in the SPRZ NY EAMES Collection. The UNIQLO Eames collaboration made its debut in Philippine stores yesterday.

Among the most influential designers of the 20th century, Charles and Ray Eames transformed how people experienced and observed the world through furniture, architecture, public spaces, and films. The Eamses made waves in the design world after World War II with their molded plywood furniture, of which the plywood chair was touted as “the chair of the 20th century.” Their iconic pieces remain in production under Herman Miller and Vitra.
The Washington Post once described them as the couple that changed the way the 20th century sat down. They also curated an interactive exhibition on mathematics for IBM in 1961 so groundbreaking that it is still on display today.
Browsing the UNIQLO Eames collection, one will instantly recognize the exploded axonometric of the leather lounge chair and ottoman, silhouettes of the wire chair, and the Eames dot pattern designed by Ray. Check out the available designs here.
Like UNIQLO, Charles and Ray believed that good design and quality objects should be available to all. This belief underpinned their work with innovative materials to celebrate the uncommon beauty of common things and to uplift people in their everyday lives. The Eames Office is currently run by Charles’s grandchildren (Byron Atwood, Lucia Atwood, Eames Demetrios, Llisa Demetrios, and Carla Hartman), and great-grandchildren.
