Connecting to The New Modern: Buck Sia on Future of Architecture
Buck Richnold Sia is the principal architect of Zubu Design Associates (Zubu) which he founded in 2010. He acquired his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of San Carlos in 2002 and rank at 9th place in the 2003 architecture licensure examination. Currently, he serves as a district director of the UAP C1 and an active stakeholder for the placemaking sector of Cebu Creative initiatives. Aside from being an architect, he leads various family businesses in retail, distribution, and real estate.
The Cebu-based firm, Zubu Design Associates, is a team of creative and committed professionals that values the evolution of architecture, its progression and continuously welcomes opportunities for innovative design solutions. As a firm that challenges the status quo, the studio has garnered various shortlist and awards from Plan Awards, Good Design Awards, and the World Architecture Festival.

On the upcoming “Connecting to The New Modern” BluPrint Webinar, this December 9 and 10, architect Buck Sia will share his expertise and knowledge on the Future of Architecture. Towards resurfacing the new modern world, the future of architecture has its uncertainties yet on the bright side, leading to opportunities and potentials. It includes being able to adapt to the changes of the times, where living and working spaces shall define growth and expansion. Design factors such as durability, functionality, and aesthetics, together with the integration of sustainable and green solutions shall be further explored, accommodating the rising needs of the country’s rapid urbanization.
Welcoming the new modern, there are certain factors that can help prepare oneself. As per architect Buck, “The constant state of self-evaluation pushes one to improve, to be very decisive in the directions to take and encourages strong leadership.”
“Also, as Filipino architects, there’s a need to envision a new Philippines in the new modern. It starts with our culture of accountability and agency. It starts with understanding that to build a better Philippines is to build each individual to his or her own potential. Architecture can be a tool since we work with foresight in mind, yet we have to think that architecture is for society and not necessarily our livelihood,” shares Sia.
