Daniel Lampa’s Weekly Round-up: An Exhibit as rare as Halley’s Comet

The incredible instinct of art connoisseur, Daniel Lampa, has once again led him to something that only happens once in a blue moon. His weekly round-up for this week highlights the artist behind the Five Gardens show and all the other details you’ll need to treat your eyes to this jaw-dropping exhibit.

Geraldine Javier was born in Manila, Philippines, in 1970. She first pursued a career in nursing before turning to the arts and studied at The University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts. Since 1995, she has been doing group and solo exhibitions in Manila and internationally as well. Some countries include Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, the USA, Indonesia, Shanghai, Australia, Berlin. In 2003 she was awarded the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award, issued by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The following year she was one of the recipients of the Ateneo Art Awards. In 2009, She participated at the Prague Biennale in the Czech Republic. She was quoted to have said that Roberto Chabet, who is widely acknowledged as the father of Conceptual Art in the Philippines, greatly influenced her. Nature and natural history are the usual subjects in Geraldine Javier’s installations, oil paintings, and embroidery prominently incorporated into her canvases as seen in her exhibits.

For her exhibit, Five Gardens at Artinformal, the artist based in Batangas wanted to ask the four artists – Derek Jarman, Frida Kahlo, Gertrude Jekyll, and Claude Monet, all passionate gardeners why was a garden vital to them and herself? She showcases her answers in the stunning use of colors and textures on her paintings, engraved cow hip bones, and the astounding beauty of her installations. 

Five Gardens was set to be extended until August 31, 2021, at Artinformal Makati, The Alley at Karrivin but due to the recent ECQ implementation, the exhibit will be open until August 5, 2021, and will reopen on August 21,2021.
