Fashionable Experiences: The Architectural Paradigm in Michael Leyva’s Fashion Show

There is no doubt that Fashion and Architecture go hand in hand, as both celebrate individuality and visualization. A strong interplay between the two meet in one indisputable space, often in perfect harmony, which is the Fashion Show.

From minimalist installations to monumental set designs, Architecture transforms itself into a temporary space to create an experience that matches High Fashion.

It is no wonder, then, that Michael Leyva, one of the country’s upcoming and forward-thinking designers, saw the National Museum of Natural History as the perfect backdrop to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the Fashion Industry.

Known for his lavish and extravagant designs, Michael Leyva features his latest couture creations in the six-storey museum designed by Architect Dominic Galicia in collaboration with Interior Designer Tina Periquet.

“Hiraya: Isang Dekada ng Aming Pagmamahal at Pangarap”, pays homage to his dreams and aspirations, making history as the first fashion gala in the country that was held in a museum. His 10th-anniversary collection underlines his strength and style inspired by Architecture and Design.

At the heart of the museum is a courtyard where guests are given the centerstage, giving them a tantalizing teaser of the show. A large glazed canopy covering the courtyard is lifted by a sweeping structural support dubbed as “The Tree of Life”.

World-renowned engineering firm Arup implemented a Diagrid Structural System to create the triangular framework with diagonal support beams, allowing the sweeping tree design to come to life.

The museum ramp connecting all six floors of the museum became the winding pathway that unveiled the evening’s exhibition. As models descended, gilt-laden pieces refracted on the kaleidoscopic backdrop, creating a light-filled runway show. The play of this silhouette set a stylistic tempo throughout the whole show. Hues of purple continue to fill up the space and the evolution of the wardrobe followed.

The fantasy continues as Leyva’s creations grace the runway: intricate evening gowns, voluminous headpieces, and even architectural wonders; pieces nothing short of exquisite.

Nowhere is it true that beauty needs a setting to bring out its perfection. As Fashion continues to evolve, we can look forward as Architecture transforms itself to create unique experiences that leave an impression of timelessness.
