A recent study published by the University of the Philippines (UP) COVID-19 Pandemic Response Team, Modified Community Quarantine beyond April 30: Analysis and Recommendations reveals: “Time-series analysis shows it now takes a little longer for the number of confirmed cases to double in number. What took 3 days for the total number of cases to double now takes about 6 days to happenBased on these trends, one can estimate about 9,000 to 44,000* possible cases reported by the end of April 2020.” The report also shows that Benguet, Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao del Sur, Region 3 (except Aurora and Zambales), and Region 4-A showed over 90% probability of outbreak, when the UP team mapped the disease “at the provincial level using population density as proxy measure of ‘outbreak spread potential’,” based on 9 April 2020 data available.

With these numbers, we can only expect an overcapacity of hospitals in the Philippines. The National Capital Region has been suffering from it since March, but through the collaboration of the private sector and some government agencies, more beds for patients under investigation (PUIs) and patients under monitoring (PUMs) are being set up. For the rest of the country, besides LGUs being encouraged to identify quarantine centers, 125 regional evacuation centers, built through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Evacuation Center Development Program, are converted to respond to the increasing COVID-19 cases in different regions of the country.

Here’s where these converted COVID-19 evacuation centers are in Visayas:

The regional evacuation centers have been under joint inspection with the Department of Health (DOH) and DPWH, and are following the DOH epidemiologist’s guidelines on appropriate distancing of beds to be proper COVID-19 evacuation centers.
