An Exclusive Tour of Mike Carandang’s Eclectic-Industrial Loft by Space Encounters

  • October 3, 2017

Upon turnover, your unit is a blank canvas. Just like art and fashion, your condo is a place to express your personality. TV Producer and Emmy Awardee Mike Carandang finds it easy to describe his space in three words: “It’s so me!”After years of working in New York and L.A. working with Tyra Banks, Mike is now residing in Manila as the head of One Mega Group’s TV100. He called Space Encounters to take care of the unit’s interior.

You go to a professional to get your hair done, so it should be the same with your space. It might be great to do it yourself but it is so different when you have someone who really does it — Mike Carandang on getting Space Encounters to design his unit.

As you enter the unit, to your right will be the kitchen which has an old elevator door to give it that New York apartment vibe. Wilmer Lopez, founder and principal designer of Space Encounters shares that the designer’s main inspiration was old New York warehouses. He wanted remind his client’s life in the US.

Deeper in the unit, you are treated to a feast of cool textures and patterns. The unit is a collection of the pieces Mike gets from his travels. A number of the accessories and furniture in the unit are from Space Encounters.

I would never have bought half of the pieces Wilmer bought but somehow it works and I like them — Mike Carandang on getting Space Encounters to design his unit

Mike shares that Wilmer and the Space Encounters team just knew what Mike wanted. Also inside the unit are pieces from Michael Cinco, gifts from Tyra Banks, and even an art piece by Allison Harvard, all of which are people Mike have closely worked with. However, his Emmy’s real home is at his parents’ home in the USA and he only borrowed it to have in the shoot. “I gave it to my parents as a gift… My mom is a typical mommy, so the Emmy is displayed with her other angel figurines,” Mike laughs.

Right across the living room is the dining room which hs mixed-but-matched chairs. For a very chill vibe, a bench was placed on one side to bridge the dining to the living room. On the left, the staircase is given a unique treatment from the Space ENcounters team. Initially a hanging staircase, Space Encounters added wooden cabinets with different patterns. The cabinet sizes were made to perfectly fit Mike’s luggage bags and a shoe cabinet Mike requested.

So many things happen on this table. Business meetings, hanging out, relationships on the brink—laughs Mike on his dining table.

On the second floor of the loft unit, Space Encounters gave Mike’s man cave a study for when times he needs to work at home. The art piece in the space is special to Mike as it is filled with important information about his life.

Right above the kitchen is an extended loft Space Encounters added just so Mike can get his dream loft. After consulting with the building engineers and getting the go-signal, the space is now a private lounge area for Mike. A Dominic Rubio x Frederick Peralta painting hangs in the space, to its right is a shelf with Mike’s most prized possessions.

Both Mike Carandang and Wilmer Lopez saw the unit as a jigsaw puzzle that perfectly fit once placed together.

It’s masculine, it’s quirky, it’s me — Mike Carandang
